A psychiatrist and a store window decorator were the first gay couple to tie the knot in Spain yesterday. The couple, Carlos Baturin German and Emilio Menendez Menendez, hadn't planned on being Spain's first wedded couple; paperwork and court dockets just worked in their favor. Everyone drink a toast! While they've already been together for 30 years already, may they share another 30 years of happiness and joy.

"We're normal people who love each other and want to be happy," Menendez said afterward outside of the Tres Cantos town hall.

"The (Catholic) bishops have lost an opportunity to be shepherds," he added, saying the church could have tried to mend fences by reserving church weddings for heterosexual couples while accepting civil marriages for gays.
