Closeted congressman David Dreier (R-CA) recently voted against the Conyers amendment to the Federal Hate Crimes act. The Conyers amendment specifically added sexual orientation to the hate crimes act. Here is a case of an elected official actively working against our interests while having a relationship with his male chief of staff. Dreier's hypocrisy and double life was the subject of a major Hustler expose a while back. BlogACTIVE, which outed the congressman originally, is advocating that people call Dreier's office and ask how a gay man could vote against protecting gays and lesbians from hate crimes. You can call the congressman at (202) 225-2305.

A friendly correction: It also was the first time that an EXPLICITLY TRANS-INCLUSIVE bill was passed at the federal level. Conyers' amendment included both sexual orientation and gender identity.
