Coats to the Rescue!

The White House has asked our own erstwhile Senator Dan Coats to shepherd Harriet Miers through the Senate confirmation process, given his cred with the right-wing fringe of the Republican Party. The hope is that Coats "will help assauge concerns in the Senate about the nomination." On his first day on the job, Coats had this to say about the (un)importance of being, you know, smart:

"If great intellectual powerhouse is a qualification to be a member of the court and represent the American people and the wishes of the American people and to interpret the Constitution, then I think we have a court so skewed on the intellectual side that we may not be getting representation of America as a whole," Mr. Coats said in a CNN interview that was quoted here in the New York Times.

If this is Coats when he's trying to help, what does the man say when he's trying to hurt?

Robin Winston on Indiana Week in Review: 'A perfect example of the right-hand not knowing what the far right-hand is doing.' And, with a twinkle in his eye,'Their busy eating their young.' (Paleocons munching down on neocons...what a hoot!)
