Indiana households, foundations and companies gave $4.86 billion in 2003, according to a new study, earning Hoosiers high marks for generosity.
More than 79 percent of households gave to charity, compared with 67 percent nationally.
The wealthy give more on average, but as a percentage of their income, the less well-off are the biggest givers. Households earning less than $50,000 per year donated about 5.6 percent of their income, compared with just 3.7 percent for those earning more than $100,000.
