This story is a couple weeks old now, but PETA founder and president Ingrid Newkirk came to Indianapolis recently. She was doing a book signing at BookMamas in Irvington (which is a great little bookstore - even if they don't take credit cards!) for her new book, "Making Kind Choices." I, of course, bought the book and had it autographed.
Thanks to my new boss I was also able to go to a party for Ingrid before the book signing. I was amazed at how many people I already knew at the party. Several of the people who are working for LGBT rights here in Indianapolis were at the party and I had a great time mixing with other like-minded folks. Ingrid gave a brief speech and showed some PETA commercials. She was educating, entertaining and, as always, inspiring.
As the leader of a volunteer organization, I asked her to share her secret of success in the non-profit world with me. Her answer? "In a word, persistence."
