Check out NMVK's recent post on Bob Garfield's Advertising Age article "Wal-Mart's New Online Children's 'Hub' a Real Bomb." In the article Garfield refers to the site as "soooo gay."
Should an article in a major publication use the word "gay" to reference something derogatory? NMVK takes Garfield to task and I have to say, I don't blame him. I hate it when anyone says something is "gay" and they mean it in a bad way. I'm gay. It's not bad. Period. I'd never think of - and I doubt Garfield would either - degrading something by calling it "soooo black" or "soooo handicapped" or "soooo female."
What are your thoughts? Should we get over it? Is it time to just ignore the vernacular and enjoy the gains we've made through the years? Or does using the name of our sub-classification in a derogatory manner set back the cause?
