A 21 year old U.S. Marine accused of raping a Filipina college student last year was sentenced to life in prison (40 years) yesterday. After a night of drinking at a local bar, Lance Corporeal Daniel Smith carried the drunk student back to a rented van where he became sexually agressive with her as she tried to fight him off. The college student, known only as "Nicole" for her privacy, passed out from intoxication and Smith subsequently raped her. She accused three other Marines of standing by and cheering Smith on, but they were acquitted in court due to a lack of evidence.

"Judge Benjamin Pozon, of the Makati Regional Trial Court, said the severe penalty for Smith, 21, was aimed 'to protect women against the unbridled bestiality of persons who cannot control their libidinous proclivity.'"

While it saddens me a great deal that (some in) our military armed forces continue to bring violent racist and sexist ideologies with them when based in areas around the world and actively demonstrate what a misogynistic, white boys' club it all remains, I am relieved that justice seems to have won over. I am relieved that "Nicole," despite being told what an uphill and impossible battle it would be to try and convict a U.S. Marine, was brave enough to stand up for her right to be counted as a human being, instead of a piece of exotic meat to be devoured by a true dog. I am relieved that we all get to sleep with the knowledge that a rapist tonight is right where he should be, instead of being hailed a victim of the other sex.

I am relieved.
