I haven't checked recently to see where the Indiana ACLU's case against former Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma on legislative prayer is in the appeals process. However, the current debate over whether or not SJR-7 should be become part of our Indiana Constitution has prompted me to engage in drafting a suggested non-denominational supplication for our lawmakers use. With mild apologies to Reinhold Niebuhr's Serenity Prayer:

"Lord grant me the serenity to reject language that neither I nor any of my rational colleagues can even begin to understand, the courage to change language that I can change if indeed I must accept any language at all, which I really do not have to and shouldn't, and the wisdom to know the difference between tinkering with the Bill of Rights to energize what some call Thy Base in November 2008 and faithfully following Thy admonition to treat all Hoosiers fairly and equally as my legislative oath hath also commanded me."
