The following comes from Indiana Equality, in support of the bipartisan initiative of Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi and Representative Greg Porter:

Call your State Legislator TODAY!
Ask them to vote Yes on Rep. Porter's Bias Crimes Amendment to Senate Bill 45

Make Your Voice Heard! Tell Your State Representative to include language against bias crimes when they vote today on Senate Bill 45.

State Representative Greg Porter has this morning introduced an amendment to Senate Bill 45 that would change Indiana's sentencing law to add the following as aggravating circumstances for persons who commit "bias crimes," specifically the person who committed the offense knowingly or intentionally:

(A) selected the individual who was injured by the offense; or (B) damaged or otherwise affected property by the offense; because of the color, creed, disability, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex of the injured individual or of the owner or occupant of the property.

The amendment also creates a civil action which a victim of a bias crime can institute against a bias crime offender.

This second reading amendment to SB 45 will be considered TODAY by the Indiana House of Representatives.

Take Action Immediately!

Call the switchboard at the Indiana House of Representatives (317-232-9600 or 800-382-9842) and ask your State Representative to vote YES on Rep. Porter's amendment to SB 45.

Message: "I urge you to support Rep. Porter's bias crimes amendment to SB 45. All Hoosiers have a stake in an effective response to violent bigotry. Such incidents damage the very fabric of our society and fragment Hoosier communities."
