On the heels of the recently published autobiography of John Amaechi, a former Penn State and NBA player who came out in the book, today, Los Angeles Times sports reporter of 23 years Mike Penner announced to his readers that he is transsexual and will soon begin living openly as a woman (and, I'd assume, having reassignment surgery, though that's not specified).

When you reach the point when one gender causes heartache and unbearable discomfort, and the other brings more joy and fulfillment than you ever imagined possible, it shouldn't take two tons of bricks to fall in order to know what to do.

It didn't with me.

With me, all it took was 1.99 tons.

The rest of his column is as heartfelt, and worth reading.

Are we becoming more open--as individuals and as a society--that Mike-soon-to-be-Christine can find the courage to be honest and that the LA Times is keeping her on as a sportswriter?
