"Twenty years ago Gay Pride was a transforming event. There was energy in the air based on the sheer joy of seeing our entire diverse community out in public. We needed to be each other's role models because we didn't have public ones. We called it "pride" because that's what we hope[d] for.

"Pride Festivals today are zapped of that energy as we've became a demographic with perceived wealth to be marketed to by businesses and politicians.

"In 20 years everything on our political agenda today will be won and then some. The concept of "pride" will evolve yet again.

"Over the next 20 years Pride Festivals will fall out of favor as we move from outward challenges to inward ones. We'll grow up to understand that pride cannot be given or taken away by others. In our past, we marched to be proud and not ashamed. The next 20 years we convince ourselves." -- Former Log Cabin Republicans head Rich Tafel to 365gay.com in answer to the question, "Where will we be in 20 years? If we get all our rights, will our GLBT community vanish?"
