I took my first stab at joining a gay/gay friendly sport's group by signing up for NYC's Big Apple Dodgeball league. Big Apple Dodgeball is the first gay/gay friendly dodgeball league out there and I couldn't be happier to be a member. Despite Dodgeball not being the most serious of sports, I'm finding organizations like these can offer an incredibly healthy and cool way to meet gay and gay-friendly people outside of any bar or social gay scene.
The first games of Big Apple Dodgeball started two weeks ago and the league runs through December. Monday night marked the close of the just the second round of games out of the season's eight games, yet there is already a strong sense of camaraderie, friendship and healthy competitiveness being shared amongst all players. This is the first time I've really ever seen gays, lesbians, straights, and all different men and women of the multi-genred community come together for the sole purpose of getting along and having fun! As Monday night's games were well under way, I smiled upon seeing a bear hugging a twink, a trans-MTF high-fiving a Wall Streeter, and a muscleman's arm slung tightly over an itty-bitty lesbian's shoulder. Now that's community!
