Since I live in Indiana, I hadn't had a chance to see RuPaul's theatrical "masterpiece," Starrbooty. (Hey, what can I say? There's not a lot of red carpet in Indianapolis!) If you haven't either, the flick hits DVD on October 30, just in time for Halloween! Lucky for us, Ru had "her people" send us a preview copy of the flick and followed up with e-mail to me - including an inside story for our readers.
The movie mocks those goddawful 70's exploitation films so convincingly that sometimes it's hard to forget it's supposed to be bad. The flick features several drag queens and a truckload of awful acting. RuPaul plays Starrbooty, a supermodel government agent out to save her niece from the evil clutches of her nemesis, Annaka Manners (Candis Cayne), by going "undercover" as a prostitute. Lahoma Van Zandt steals the show as Starrbooty's sidekick, Agent Turner, by delivering each line so woodenly your ears will ache. (Trailer's after the jump)
Ru tells us more about Annaka's character:
Last week I finally got to show my ex-boyfriend, Georges, Starrbooty and he loved it. I saw it again for the 100th time and still find it effing hilarious. It was extra special showing it to Georges because he inspired me on many levels during the conception of this movie, most notably by giving me the name of the character played by Candis Cayne. Thirteen years ago when he and I lived together, he told me that a girl he dated in high school was named Annaka Manners. I immediately fell in love with that name and vowed to somehow use it in the future. Well that day came when I was writing the script for Starrbooty. The ironic thing is that Georges said the character in the movie is not that different from the Annaka Manners he dated back in Perth all those years ago.
