Oral Roberts University in More Hot Water

PhotobucketA former senior accountant at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma alleges that more than $1 billion annually was inappropriately funneled through the school.

You may remember the self-proclaimed “Christian University” as the anti-gay school that will not enroll openly gay students and expels students already enrolled that are found to be gay. Students must sign an honor code that says, "I will not engage in or attempt to engage in any illicit, unscriptural Sexual Acts, which shall include ... any homosexual activity." They also had members of Soulforce Equality Ride arrested when they entered their campus in 2006.

The lawsuit claims that an "unrestricted" account was used to funnel "unusually large" sums of money through the university each month. The amount exceeded $1 billion on an annual basis and wasn't used for any legitimate university purpose.

Named in the lawsuit are Richard Roberts, the school's former president, and his wife, Lindsay, along with other former regents. Roberts resigned as president days after the lawsuit was filed.

This is just the latest scandal to hit the school. There have been longstanding claims of wrongdoing, including illegal involvement in local political campaigns and lavish personal spending at donors' expense.

It is always amazing to see the hypocrisy behind these “morally superior” religious institutions.

I guess illegally funneling large sums of cash for personal gain is okay with God as long as there are no gays involved.

Well praise the Lord and pass the offering plate…

*cue dramatic music* Bum, bum, bum . . .

'praise the Lord and pass the offering plate…'
I was thinking more:
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Need a little BIT more of my TWELVE ounce nutrition
One more helpin' of what I've been havin'
I'm takin' my turn on the sin wagon

LOL... I stand corrected, Paula.

I was going to make an "Oral University" joke, but decided to take the high road... ;)

I have never read what I would consider an entirely objective account, but believe it's true that Roberts' older son committed suicide in relation to being gay about 25 years ago.

Before "TV ministries" became such an industry unto itself, Roberts only competitor for fame and following among Protestants was Billy Graham.
While he was eclipsed long ago, and, like Jerry Falwell before his too-late death, his empire has gone through ups and downs [he once literally said he would die if a certain sum wasn't reached—and it worked], donations have continued over these many decades though I highly doubt the figure of a billion dollars in one year if not the possibility of financial abuse and greed, not unknown among any "faith."

But even in Tulsa, whose economy benefits from his university, Roberts Inc. has not been universally popular. I have a friend whose father worked in a Tulsa post office several years ago. After repeated problems with their toilets stopping up, a plumber finally decided to dig up its underground piping to see what the recurring problem was. Faith might move mountains, but a visit from someone working for Our Lady of Rata Rooter was required. He discovered that one or more postal employees had been flushing mail addressed to Roberts down the toilets, so often and so much that it finally caused one huge blockage.

Suspecting that much of it might have donations in it, the postal service added "neither urine nor feces" to their famous motto of what would not prevent them from delivering the mail and called Roberts' office who sent representatives to collect the bags of soaked and undoubtedly extremely smelly and sticky bounty. And an overflowing toilet shall lead them....

"And an overflowing toilet shall lead them...."

Michael, I think that will make me giggle for days.
