AFA's at it again, this time with Hallmark

The AFA is asking for a boycott of Hallmark because they're publishing bland same-sex marriage congratulations cards:

Ask them to stop promoting a lifestyle that is not only unhealthy, but is also illegal in 48 states.

Hallmark Greeting Cards has announced it will begin selling same-sex wedding cards, even though same-sex marriage is legal in only two states. The purpose, they say, is to satisfy consumer demand. It appears that their purpose is also to push same-sex marriage. Last year Hallmark began offering "coming out" cards - as in "coming out of the closet" -- a euphemism for announcing homosexuality.

We've all given or received Hallmark Cards - remember their slogan - "when you care enough to send the very best." But promoting same-sex marriage for profit is not the very best for families or our nation.

Hallmark is a private company obviously driven by greed. Let them know you do not appreciate Hallmark promoting a lifestyle which is illegal in 48 states. American Greeting Cards, Hallmark's competitor, does not offer same-sex marriage cards.

I don't see what this will do; I doubt the people who participate in such boycotts have too many friends to send cards to anyway.

I do like the fact that they point out that Hallmark's "promoting a lifestyle" that's "illegal in 48 states." Last time I checked, homosexuality isn't illegal anywhere in the US anymore. Unless they're saying that same-sex marriage isn't an institution, but a way of life.

Hallmark obviously is a private company driven by greed; if there was a quasi-popular holiday to celebrate hot dogs they'd have a line of cards for it. But considering that the whole "pro-family" movement was designed and funded expressly to get votes to promote better tax and trade conditions for greedy corporations in the US, the AFA or any other right-wing group really isn't in a position to criticize.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this boycott will effect as much change as the boycotts on Ford and McDonald's have: absolutely none. I'm starting to think that their motivations are related to something other than changing company policy....

The idealogues of the AFA are the same people who previously would have been deniers of the celebration of Christmas. They would have been against Christmas Cards also. Hard to even care anymore about the AFA or other such anti-family associations.

Dear AFA;

Taking a moment away from a gathering here to answer this(I needed some air and to rest my ears from the music, Cherchez la Femme is playing right now...perhaps appropriately).

First of all, our "lifestyle" has not been illegal in any state since 2003. None. Not one.

Secondly, it was not illegal in 48 states for many years before 2003.

Thirdly same sex marriage is recognised in THREE states, leaving 47 that currently do not, and New Jersey not only recognising it but licensing it in the near future is pretty much a sure thing.

Well, my dear AFA, you clearly need better attorneys to explain the legal status of same sex couples and individuals. You might try not hiring Regent or Liberty grads.

If you were considering offering me a tender, I am afraid that you are too late. I am off to the Netherlands on Thursday....with a team of lawyers, none of whom are from Regent or Liberty....they attended real, accredited schools...

The "lifestyle" that is "illegal in 48 states bit" is a doozy, isn't it?

They wish. (And to see us in concentration camps again.)

AFA is a legend in its own mind. They've brought down Procter & Gamble, Disney, and Ford, and are in the process of bringing McDonald's to its knees.

Hateful fools.

For my part, I'm going to buy Hallmark products at the next opportunity.

I am getting sick of these irritating boycotts. I take issue with Hallmarks commodification of every single holiday. I do believe that they would create weekly holidays to increase profits. This is the first time in a long time that commodification is finally going to lead to a little more equality. Everyone deserves to have their love validated.

Buy Hallmark stock. Every time the AFA boycotts someone, their sales increase.

The AFA in all their haste to get their fundie followers to speak out against the ruination of Western Society has a petition to sign on their website and it sends directly to Hallmark.

However, they allow you to change the text copy of the letter and thus one can change the text from a negative statement to a great big thank you to Hallmark sent via the AFA's website.

Which while juvenile is fun nonetheless.

Dear Chairman Hall:

I am overjoyed that Hallmark is celebrating the lives of gay and lesbian Americans.

There was a time Hallmark told us to send the very best. I am happy to see you have taken a giant step forward.

Hallmark, will be getting more of my business.
