McCain's VP Requirements? Must Hate Gays

So what is McCain looking for in a Vice-President? One thing is for sure- they have to be anti-gay.

ap_tom_ridge_080814_mn.jpgIn an interview with the Weekly Standard, McCain muses about VP picks:

I think it's a fundamental tenet of our party to be pro-life but that does not mean we exclude people from our party that are pro-choice. We just have a--albeit strong--but just it's a disagreement. And I think Ridge is a great example of that. Far more so than Bloomberg, because Bloomberg is pro-gay rights, pro, you know, a number of other issues.

That's right- McCain can overlook some things, but not supporting gay rights. Log Cabin Republicans take note, because I'm not sure he can spell it out any clearer.

This latest bit of McCain bile came while discussing the possibility of Tom Ridge, who is pro-choice, as a running mate. McCain goes on to say that someone like New York Mayor Bloomberg would be "unpalatable" to social conservatives because of his support for gay rights.

It is clear that McCain thinks our community is the lowest of the low. While he is willing to bend on a woman's right to choose (something he has staunchly opposed his entire career but would now consider a "disagreement"), he refuses to consider thinking about the LGBT community as equal citizens or being around any one that does.

I guess only "straight" talk is allowed on that Straight Talk Express bus of his.

McCain has continually thrown our community to the wolves- speaking out against same-sex couples adopting, supporting DADT & DOMA, opposing hate crimes legislation- and he will continue to do so. Now he has made it clear that he doesn't want to even surround himself with anyone that could educate him about LGBT people.

He has once again retreated into his bigoted bubble, further selling his soul to the religious right.

Well, you gotta have standards! Geez!

I have to say though - Tom Ridge scares the shit out of me. He's like Richard Nixon lite. Always scowling and looking like he's going to blubber, "I am NOT a Waterboarder!"

I feel slowly that the public is seeing through this thin veil of beibs gay is wrong to the fact that it is just plain bigotry and hatred. Then the GOP will find something wlse to scare and divide people with

What I find most amazing is that regardless of how homophobic both McCain and his running mate are the Log Cabin Republicans will still endorse them and gay people will pull the lever for them in November. In both 2000 & 2004 approximately 25% of gay people voted for Bush. Unbelievable and disgusting!

Cue all the "gay rights isn't my biggest priority" rationalizations from the LCRs. It's fine if you consider security, economics or whatever to be a higher priority than LGBT equality, but does it rank at all with these folks?

gay rights isn't my biggest priority!

There, I said it. It feels good. But even still, I don't see how that leads to a republican vote.
