With a Whimper, Not a Bang

I think it's a bit too early to declare the Patriot's dynasty dead, but it's at least badly injured. Belichik will fill the football world in on Brady's status at 3:00 PM EST in what I imagine will be as grumpy and cryptic a fashion as he can muster. Official Patriot's Fan Friend, Huginn, reports that the Pats may be trying to acquire Chris Simms in an effort to salvage the season, though he'd like to see them trade for Rex Grossman.

As a "good sport" Colts fan I am officially obligated to express my sympathies for the Patriot's organization and mention that I wish Brady were healthy so that we could beat them at full strength. If that reads disingenuous, just consider that it's only exactly as disingenuous as when Bill Simmons wrote something similar about the Colts, though, on that occasion, it was within the context of claiming that the Colts were banged up on purpose and that they were cruelly "cheating" the Patriots. I hate that bastard.

In any case, the story of the great and mighty Patriots seems to be ending with a whimper and not with a bang. It didn't end with a "high" bang (Superbowl) or a low bang (team implodes and loses by 49 points to the craptacular Chiefs), but rather with a boring, grinding win against the worst team in the NFL. In other words, it seems like the Patriots are even being denied the dignity of a great death -- a sensational team implosion triggered by the Brady injury that would further accentuate how great they were last year and provide adequate closure for their great tragic arc. No, no. Sadly, they will sputter and claw their way to a respectable 7-9 or 8-8 season.

Even the injury itself was quiet. Given its apparent severity, it didn't seem like a great big deal. There was nothing gruesome or ghastly about it. Brady hobbled off the field and even went down the stairs on his own.

In other Bilerico football news, my post about Indy's Super Bowl nod is now the most popular post on Bilerico-Indiana. Why?

I included a picture of Brady Quinn with his shirt off and it's now the #1 picture shown when you do a Google image search.

I guess you have to be grateful for the little things in life. :)
