"My take on it is that it is totally unnecessary. I'm absolutely opposed to it. And I've been working very hard to try to talk to undecided voters and do whatever I can to help defeat it. We should not be legislating discrimination into Florida's Constitution, No. 1, and No. 2, the language in the amendment goes further than just prohibiting gay marriage or the recognition of the gay marriage from another state.
It would actually go as far as prohibiting heterosexual domestic partnerships. And I have thousands of senior citizens who, after being widows or widowers, are living together in warm, loving relationships for many, many years but choose not to get married for whatever reason. Legislative bodies and the government should not be inserting themselves into private relationships and the decision making that private families make.
These are people who are trying to impose their morals on others. Their view of the world goes way beyond just opposing gay marriage. They oppose any relationship that is not defined the way they think is appropriate. And that's dangerous."
