Why Gay Marriage Is an Asian-American Matter

When Asian Week asked me to write an op-ed piece about the aftermath of Proposition 8 and how the issue of gay marriage ties into the Asian-American community, I knew exactly what I wanted to write about. After the an article exploring why San Francisco Chronicle ran Asians were the only ethnic minority to produce a majority of voters against Prop. 8, a reader commented on the Chronicle's website:

Why in the world would the Asian American community ally itself with the gays? The Asian American community [has] virtually nothing in common with the gays except maybe being minorities.

Of course, I had something to say about this. Read "Why Gay Marriage Is an Asian-American Matter."

I would like to leave a really thoughtful comment about your article. It really was interesting and relevant to the amicus briefs that are turning up in Cali.

But all I can really say is way to kick some ass in the comments section Prince.

I now formally apologize for not being highbrow enough for the Bilerico community.

Hell, I'm not highbrow enough for the Bilerico community. All I ever want to talk about is 24. :)

None of us are. We just wing it. :)

Good thing you're unable to speak about that cheap show ;).

I found the article quite lovely-- as opposed to your taste in TV series-- but I was appalled by the comments over at that side. Resentment be their names.

We have to defend the Constitution. What a concept. The article, well done you.

You're not alone - I'm as lefty liberal as they come, and I enjoy 24 as well. Pure absurdist escapism. What's not to love? :D

Yes I think PoCs should care because there's issues of discrimination. But as a same gender loving person of color, I have to disagree with the movement and I think this article fails to put out that this movement is a)done mainly by white males who have the most privilege in our society who only care about reaching out when their interests are at stake and not at any other time and b)once gay marriage passes, the needs of PoCs will go ignored as usual and the racism and disparity will continue.
