"In a scene from "I Am Legend" Will Smith talks to a mannequin to try to emulate human contact. Of course this fall short and it's exactly the same dynamic that exists on the Web when organizations refuse to talk back to the people who they want to talk to. The substitute doesn't work and all that's left is something that looks alive from a distant, but really isn't."

-- Social marketing specialist David Armano in a post that could have been written directly for most large LGBT organizations on how to use online tools effectively.

I couldn't agree more. I knew "I Am Legend" had more to it than what meets the eye.

Great read, Bil. I began working in online services back in 1994, barely a year after the first graphical Web browser was invented, and saw the same thing happen with Web 1.0 as companies launched "brochure-ware" Web sites with no sense of how to employ the new medium. Amusing, if sad, to see it happening again with Web 2.0. I think there has to be some better way for LGBT orgs to share both technical resources and expertise in using the technology to connect with people.

My personal peeve at the moment when it comes to LGBT orgs' Web sites? A blog that does not allow comments (even moderated ones) is hardly a blog at all. Rule Number 1 of blogging? (You can Google it.) "A blog is a conversation."
