President Obama will tap out lesbian Kathy Martinez to serve as Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy at the Department of Labor according to the Victory Fund.
Blind since birth, Martinez is an internationally recognized disability rights leader. In 2002 she was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the National Council on Disability.
In 1997, Martinez helped stage the International Leadership Forum for Women with Disabilities, which attracted more than 600 participants from 80 countries.
Obama also recently appointed openly lesbian attorney Emily C. Hewitt as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the court that hears monetary claims against the government. Hewitt's bio says the Baltimore native is married to attorney Eleanor Dean Acheson.
