Call for DC "Public Vote" on Marriage is an Attack on Gay Families

Let's be clear: the push by Ward 5 ANC Commissioner Bob King for a public vote on the definition of marriage is nothing more than an attack on same-sex couples disguised as democracy.

King has sent a letter to DC's 236 ANC commissioners with a proposed resolution calling for a Prop 8 style vote on whether or not same-sex couples should be able to legally marry in the District.

"The definition of marriage is too serious and too important an issue to leave in the hands of the politicians without consulting the will of the people," King wrote in an Aug. 4 letter to his fellow ANC commissioners.

"The question presented is whether the definition of marriage in the nation's capital should include same-sex marriage or should marriage be defined solely as the union of one man and one woman?" King says in his letter.

A marriage bill is expected to be introduced in the DC City Council this fall. It is expected that the bill pass the Council with a strong majority vote. As of July 7, 2009 marriages performed in other jurisdictions are recognized as marriages in DC.

It is critical that we make clear to the members of the DC Council that this call for a public vote is an attack on LGBT families. If they believe in marriage equality for same-sex couples, then they must oppose putting the civil rights and dignity of gay and lesbian families up for a public vote.

Contact your ANC commissioner and urge him/her to support marriage equality by opposing Bob King's anti-gay resolution. You can find the contact information for your ANC commissioner here.
