I've featured Senator Lisa Murkowski, Republican of Alaska, before in this space. So why am I recycling? The reason is that I have already featured, as Legislator of the Day, all of the 18 unconfirmed Senate votes (details here) who have some chance of voting in favor of ENDA.

Murkowski.jpgBut how many of you actually called or emailed Senator Murkowski? Sent this post to friends of yours in Alaska? Broiled a salmon as a burnt-offering? And isn't baked Alaska delicious? So let's all get on the phone and order an ENDA to-go.

We probably have a month or so to work on those 18 Senators. We'll line them up in alphabetical order and ring their bells one at a time. Today we'll get the thrill of dialing off-continent. Tomorrow we'll re-do Arkansas.

Contact info and more after the jump.

According to Wikipedia, Murkowski is a moderate Republican. She is generally pro-choice on abortion and supports stem cell research. She is also a member of the Republican Majority For Choice, Republicans For Choice, and The Wish List (Women in the Senate and House), a group of pro-choice women Republicans.

She also was one of the 63 votes for the hate crimes bill in the Senate, and one of four Republicans to vote for the bill. That was a pleasant surprise to me. I'd like to see more pleasant surprises from Senator Murkowski.

Meanwhile, her cohort in the Senate, Alaska's Mark Begich, is a confirmed yes on ENDA. Alaska's not all about drilling and hunting, you know.

Please call and ask her to support S.1584, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

P.S. E. Ross of the Bent Alaska blog wrote in to say "thanks for the focus on Murkowski and ENDA! Our statewide LGBT advocacy group Alaskans Together held a call-in effort on the hate crimes bill, promoted by my web site Bent Alaska, and we were pleasantly surprised to get Lisa's support. We plan to try again with ENDA, and appreciate the national attention. ... Oh, and Jillian... 'off-continent?' LOL. Check your map."

Indeed, Alaska has not yet broken off and floated away from North America. That's California I was thinking of.
