John Marcotte has filed the paperwork to start collecting signatures to get a proposition on the ballot in California to overturn divorce. To be clear, I'm a big fan of divorce, short-term relationships, and people moving on with their lives gracefully, but this is funny. Here's the text of his law:

SECTION 1. Title. This act shall be known as the "2010 California Marriage Protection Act."

SECTION 2. Section 7.6 is added to Article I of the California Constitution to read: "No party to any marriage shall be restored to the state of an unmarried person during the lifetime of the other party unless the marriage is void or voidable, as set forth in Part 2 of Division 6 of the Family Code.

Marcotte has set up a whole site for this, proclaiming, "Hell is eternal -- just like your marriage was supposed to be."

I went over to Free Republic and this does let us take a look into various rightwing ids. Check out a few of the comments:

Some things just go too far.

Well the one woman - one man marriage idea would make divorce illegal. It isn't one man or one woman at a time. It is one man-one woman marriage.

the state is bankrupt and productive people are bailing out but the legislature continues it's experiments in social and environmental engineering

Good..Elimination of screwy marriages and divorces such as Brittney Spears and her generation for one....

anyway, in many of the more liberal judges' minds men can't be abused by women. Your words are the reason I will NEVER marry or live with a woman in the USA. I have several family and friends that are LEO's and I've heard your quote 100's of times. Some of the LEO's will never marry because of what they see on a daily basis - the laws twisted against men. I've been told that 90% of the restraining orders issued against men are blatant lies. No, a woman could never abuse a man...right.

This is one of the dumbest things anyone could do.

It gives the state waaaay tooo much say and authority over peoples private lives. Bad enough that one needs to have a state approval of their mariage. This even if it makes the ballot will NEVER pass

Here is an idea for CA. Put a really huge fee/tax on granting a divorce. That should close the budget gap in a hurry.

$5 marriage license and a $100,000 divorce fee . . . start with a loss leader.

Sounds good to me, at least on the surface. Divorce does far more damage to our society than homosexuality.

Marriage belongs to God, not to men, or "Government."

Check your Bible. If you want easy "divorce", use a Pagan ceremony to ritualize the "joining", and don't call it "marriage".

Typical liberal - twisting the words of both God and men to ridicule people of faith.

Until we find out more about this, who is behind it and who this person is on this website -- it may all be a ploy by Sodomites to direct attention to their cause, rather than what this says...

In other words, they're actually working to overthrow marriage, instead of protecting it...

Anyway, this could all be a very twisted ploy by some weird and strange people... i.e., "Sodomites"... LOL...

Of course, this is the rightwing we're talking about. What the initiative is proposing isn't as important as who is proposing it. Here they are trying to grapple with that question:

I usually like to start with some background on a subject or organization or bill or initiative. Does anyone has background on this and any relevant details?

Well..., before I comment too much on that initiative, I would like to know more about who is involved, what their motivation is, where they come from, who they are politically associated with and a bunch of other stuff. This sounds pretty fishy to me... so I would like to find out. :-)

Although I support the concept in principle, I don't believe this is a serious push by a conservative group or Christian organization. It seems to me that this is more likely a stunt by bitter leftwing answer of sorts to Prop. 8. These people think they can show that the real motivation behind Prop. 8 wasn't the protection of marriage but rather the hatred of gays. At least that seems to be their theory of operation on this...

And here's my fave clueless Freeper:

Here is an example of one article/posting (or whatever you call it). It doesn't seem to be satirical to me. Can you provide some satirical ones? Perhaps you're taking this to be satirical... I don't know. The guy may have a different style of writing. But, I'm still trying to find out about this outfit, so all the information anyone can provide would be nice...

Coalition of sodomites gathers to oppose God's will

Some homosexuals are working hard to overturn Prop 8 in 2010 -- instead of waiting for 2012, when Sarah Palin will be president and/or the world will come to a fiery end.

Marriage equality advocates from across the state hoping to repeal Proposition 8 in 2010 met last weekend in San Francisco to adopt a structure for a statewide signature gathering campaign and elect an interim leadership team to develop a political action committee.

I always want to know who put a bill/argument/"grassroots movement" forward and what their motivation for it was, too. Context is a wonderful thing...

... and so is good-humoured mockery of the absurd. I love that site. Maybe as much as I love the Landover Baptist site.

These sound like people of God, but these wise commentators are right--it could be sodomites trying to trick us into becoming gayby incubators for them as they destroy civilization and establish a satanic new world order led by gay-married Michelle Obama's biceps and Judy Garland reanimated from her cryogenic freeze. Its so hard. These sodomites are tricky. I bet you they might even try to infiltrate THIS site.

Gosh, Phil, you just never know ... Do you think that could be it? Do you think those disgusting sodomites might be trying to frame us, the chosen people of God, into being viewed by the average confused California voter as bigots and homo-haters? How totally devious of them! They wouldn't do that to us, now, would they?

As God-fearing Christians, we must research that part about Part 2 of Division 6 of the Family Code. Does that point in the California law specify that the only justification for divorce is adultery by the other spouse? If so, then it is stating exactly the same thing that Jesus taught us in the Sermon on the Mount! Plus, he said that guilty spouses who get divorced cannot re-marry, but an innocent spouse (that is, a faithful spouse not guilty of adultery) can re-marry after a divorce. So we have to be sure that that is what Part 2 of Division 6 of the Family Code says! (Is there anything on that website that explains this?)

And of course, you know that we evangelicals invariably embrace this part of the Word of Jesus --- it is right there in the Bible, plain as day --- and that is why we never re-marry after our first divorce unless we are as unblemished as an Easter Lily!

So if this Part 2 thing agrees with Jesus, then as God-fearing Christians we must be in favor of this referendum!

Phil, may I cry on your shoulder a bit? ... Between trying to second-guess those sneaky sodomites, and remembering all those rules about divorce that Jesus gave us ... why does this all have to be so complicated?

P.S. I didn't know that Judy Garland was frozen ... What wonderful news! The Bible says that "with God all things are possible" and ... If Jesus could rise from the dead, then why not Judy, too?

Hey - Sodomites are sneaky. The next thing you know, they'll want the right to keep their jobs too.

Grappling with the question... can you imagine what it must be like to be one of these people. It must be a very scary place to reside.
