Abstinence-only funding is still winning votes

Isn't it great that the Democrats have a 60-vote majority in the Senate? Now at least the 20% of the population that's batshit conservative won't have power over the rest of us:

A Senate committee voted Tuesday night to restore $50 million a year in federal funding for abstinence-only education that President Barack Obama has pushed to eliminate.

The 12-11 vote by the Senate Finance Committee came over objections from its chairman, Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana.

Two Democrats -- Kent Conrad of North Dakota and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas -- joined all 10 committee Republicans in voting "yes" on the measure by Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah.

Abstinence-only is a whole lot more than someone standing in front of the class and shaking his or her finger "no" at students who ignore it. It's a whole reactionary, homophobic, and sexist ideology used to turn kids over to the right side of the aisle and make them ashamed of their bodies, all while increasing unprotected sex among young people. We shouldn't have to even debate it now, but some Democrats still think they have to swing right to win.

I don't know why Lincoln's even still calling herself a Democrat. She's swung to the right because she has an election coming up and she isn't polling well, but it's not like the Republicans she's running against (or her conservative constituents) are going to credit her for being on their side. All it means is that Democrats aren't going to care about her reelection campaign.

And Kent Conrad is an idiot. Seriously, he's just dumb.

There you go, Democratic volunteers and donors. Sure, this is the most conservative Senate committee, so the Senate probably won't vote that way, and if it does the House already eliminated that funding so it won't survive conference. But it's amazing how the party still finds new ways to give you all a big "fuck you" just when you think it can't any more.

Playing at politics is their job and they want to keep their jobs because they have great pay and fantastic benies.

Yeah, I don't think this will help them keep their jobs.

Want to know what REAL indoctrination is in school? It's not a stupid rah rah "strive for your goals" speech by the President - it is Abstinence education.

If right wing lunatics were remotely credible in their political ideology they would object to this ineffective and dangerous propaganda, but they don't, do they?

After reading those studies on what actually goes on in the classroom in abstinence-only education, I whole-heartedly agree. It's nothing more than political and cultural indoctrination, and the right knows it. Of course they'd want a government grant to continue it.

Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

People who vote for Democrats hoping for change are delusional and many repeat that same mistake over and over.

The Democrats, like their Republican cousins are an amalgam of bigots and panderers, consistently pro war and anti-union.

It's clear from the history of his campaign and the actions of his administration that Obama is both a bigot and a panderer. He began with one pulpit pimp, Donnie McClurkin and ended with another, Rick Warren who gave him the pulpit to pronounce that ‘gawd’s in the mix”, torpedoing our chances for same sex marriage in California, Arizona and Florida. In return Obama gave Warren a chance to speak before billions at the Inaugural. Obama’s gotten worse, not better, since he took office on every question but one, genetic cloning from fetal tissue.

He escalated the war in Afghanistan. He bullied GM in accepting contracts that set them back 50 years. He absolutely refuses to consider campaigning to defeat Clintons’ DOMA and DADT.

Democrats are Republicans in drag.

There are some who refuse to see that the engines of social change have always been mass action movements, the effects of which are sometimes reflected in elections, court rulings and legislation. But they all came to the forefront by mass action. Those still believing in the juvenile idiocies of high school civics classes or regularly attending meeting of the League of Women Voters can vote socialist or communist or just write themselves in. I’m sure you’d do a better job in Congress than most, just don’t expect to liked by Democrats or Republicans.
