After the election and events of the past year we have learned a valuable lesson. In order to have an equality initiative on the ballot in 2012, we have to educate the hearts and minds of everyday citizens of Arizona. We know they want equality. They believe in equality. What we have failed to do is educate people on what equality means and looks like in our everyday lives. We are now redirecting ourselves to that mission of education on a one-on-one basis the fundamental concept of a free nation... where Equal Means Equal. Our goal: Equality in all matters of civil law.

That is the slogan and logo for our upcoming campaign.

Tomorrow, Oct 10th, Arizona Stonewall Democrats will show solidarity with our brothers and sisters nationally by having the Arizona-National Equality Rally at Cesar Chavez Memorial Plaza, 201 W. Washington in downtown Phoenix. We made personal invitations to 5,000 attendees of last weekend's Rainbows Festival and expect the largest turnout in Arizona since the Nov 15th Equality March of last year.

The Honorable Tom Simplot, Vice Mayor of Phoenix, will be our keynote speaker. He is openly gay and a champion of equal rights on the Phoenix City Council. Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the nation.

If you are within the sound of my voice in the Phoenix area, we hope that you will attend and tell your friends about the event. Remember, when it comes to rallies, size really does matter!

Other upcoming events you can put on your calendar are these:

  • A Halloween Party at 7:00 p.m. on Oct 29th at the 1 Voice Community Center, 725 W. Indian School Road. It will be a fund raiser for AZDEMS and the 1 Voice Center with a prize for the best costume featuring a political theme. Remember, our Governor has said that she has been put there by God...this ought to be a hoot with caricatures around that theme!
  • Our Thanksgiving Party will be on Nov 19th. We will feature talks by members of PFLAG on why they are thankful for their gay children. We'll also have a place on our Web site where you can submit your stories of thankfulness that you are GLBT yourself. In the future, we're going to be able to use some of those stories to create videos for display on our Web site and perhaps in the media blitz for our ballot initiative.
  • December 3rd we're having a Holiday Party featuring "All I Want for Christmas is Equality."
  • We are so thankful Phoenix now has a GLBT Center that we are having all of our parties there. 1 Voice Community Center, 725 W. Indian School Road.

Do you need a contact in northern, AZ? I live in Flagstaff and have worked with Equality Arizona to try to get the Flagstaff city council to pass a non-discrimination ordinance that would have covered employment, housing and public accommodations (they chickened out and passed a "diversity" resolution instead).
