Did the White House gate crashers really go through proper security?

I had a chance to sit down with contributor Kate Clinton at the Victory Fund's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Conference to talk about her experiences at the White House state dinner last month. Kate and her partner, Urvashi Vaid, were directly in front of the White House gate crashers Michaele and Tareq Salahi. Kate disputes Secret Service statements that the Salahis went through all the proper security protocols - including going through a magnetometer.

While Kate's a comic, this serious lapse in security is no laughing matter.

Bil, if indeed these and other guests did not go through magnetometer screening, as Kate appears to claim, then that is very serious, and I think you ought to pursue the matter vigerously. When I say that Kate "appears" to claim that, there seems to be a little wiggle room in that Urvashi said she hadn't gone through what she on a previous visit to the White House. So it seems possible (and one would hope) that there are less obvious ways to screen people walking past or through a particular area.

If the concern was really about security, people would have lost interest in the party crashers story two days after it happened. I was surprised to hear (read, actually) the pundits still talking about it yesterday. Best take on why that's still going on is from Bob Somberly:

"Oh, ewww, they had their own cameras.... it was just something weird." Sorry, I just cannot give much credence to her statements.

Bil, you bald spot is showing.

BTW, Love your blog, even if you think I don't.
