Congrats Annise-Parker.jpgto the new mayor:

HOUSTON -- Annise Parker has been sworn in as Houston mayor, officially making her city the nation's largest to be led by an openly gay person.

Parker took the oath of office in a private ceremony at City Hall on Saturday, two days before a public inauguration during which she will be sworn in again.

The 53-year-old Parker took the oath before state District Judge Steven Kirkland and alongside her partner, Kathy Hubbard.

Good for her. I'm currently living in the largest city in the world with a gay mayor, and while her political beliefs will be a lot more important to how she governs than her sexuality, it does make me feel better to know it can happen.

Update: Reader Matt emailed and reminded me that Berlin is bigger in population than Paris, making it the actual biggest city in the world with an openly gay mayor. Houston, Paris, and Berlin... that's an impressive line-up.

I'm from Houstopolis originally and I spent the first 38 years of my life there, (with the exception of my five years of service), and though I much prefer Austin, kudos to my hometown for electing Ms. Parker. Makes me almost want to think about moving back...

This column includes a factual error- Houston is not the largest city in the world with a gay mayor- it is Berlin, at 3.4 million people. Please correct this, I tried posting this yesterday but it has not been moderated and included yet. Thanks!

Now - when are you going to try and get an interview with the Mayor of Paris? After all, as you say, it's a big deal and you live there!. That's not a post any of the other big LGBT blogs here in the States could do...
