Socalled is a Montreal-based queer musician who mixes klezmer and rap to create... this. This is "The Good Old Days."

I also wanted to put up the video for "You are never alone," which is a great video, but Socalled's record label doesn't allow embeds. So click the previous link or watch this non-professionally recorded live performance:

And here he is with Xtra on what attracted him to klezmer:

Of course, what initially turned me on about traditional Yiddish music were all the hot, sweaty, half-naked dudes with clarinets, accordions and fiddles, playing their wild, orgiastic melodies deep into the night. No, seriously, I liked klezmer from the '30s and '40s at first because it was a form of music from my own culture that I'd never heard, that was simply funky as hell.

Terribly Canadian.

Mind you, I sort of like that, having been a Montreal resident for 14 years. I came to understand that Montreal artists always overshoot the importance of being earnest. It's part of their charm (and also emblematic of the way they have sex) but when you bring it through customs, it arrives stale and less tasty.

That was even stranger than your usual Friday picks, Alex. Wow.
