SAGE, the LGBT org for the elderly, received a large grant from the government to provide elder services:

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and the Administration on Aging have awarded Services & Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders (SAGE) a three-year, $900,000 grant to create the nation's only national resource center on LGBT aging. The National Technical Assistance Resource Center for LGBT Elders will assist communities across the country in their efforts to provide services and supports for older LGBT people. The Resource Center will provide training to aging service providers and LGBT agencies nationwide, and will offer critically important educational tools to LGBT older people.

Considering how much of our elder care in the US is currently based on heteronormative family structures, and how much it seems like our conservative government is hell-bent on reinforcing the dependence of the elderly on their children by cutting Social Security and Medicare (after the rich have attacked DB pensions for decades and looting savings put in the stock market for the past few years), elderly LGBT people are going to need all the help they can get.

While the left is joking that fiscal conservatives' plan right now is to have grandma and grandpa move back in with the kids, it's not really a joke when you have a large population of elderly people (that I hope to be a part of some day) that has children at a much lower rate than the general population.

I'm sure I'm not the only young queer who worries about what's going to come in the next few decades. It's on all of us now to make sure these services exist for the elderly, since we're all going to be there some day.

Thanks for posting - this is very historic and I know we are honored to work with SAGE - but this is huge for our entire community. the lgbt community is coming to a greater understanding of older adult issues and shedding some ageism, the big groups are recognizing the needs of older lgbt people and now we have this kind of funding beginning to come with some great advocacy on the part of sage and others.....
