The English singer Tanita Tikaram's album Ancient Heart became the break-out hit of 1988. At 19, Tikaram was slated to be among the top music stars of the decade, and her hit single, "Twist in My Sobriety" could be heard constantly on the airwaves of Europe and parts of Asia.

tanita95.jpgAfter Ancient Heart, Tikaram's work has not seen the enormous commercial success of her debut album but the singer appears to not be all that attached to the fame game and has charted her own route, sometimes literally. A 1995 interview reveals that she took off in 1992 and traveled with friends to China, and eventually ended up in San Francisco. Tikaram has appeared briefly in the lesbian filmmaker Monica Treut's 1994 film anthology Erotique and her latest album Sentimental (2005) was released on a French label, Naïve Records. "Twist in My Sobriety" was part of the soundtrack to the 2001 film Bandits, starring Bruce Willis, Cate Blanchett, and Billy Bob Thornton.

Long the object of speculation, she was included in Lesbian Favorites: Women Like Us, a compilation of work by lesbian singers. She's also appeared on this website, Famous and Gay, and the Diva interview indicates that she's certainly not unaware of the speculation about her sexuality but is unwilling to be tied to a category, which I respect.

Given her alternative career routes and apparent willingness to look outside the box, I've always claimed her as righteously queer.

Music videos after the jump.
