I'd like to interrupt The Bilerico Project's unofficial mission of being All Gay All the Time (well, at least when I post) to talk about race for a few minutes. While I wanted to spend most of this month macrameing friendship bracelets for Zac Efron, I instead have been preoccupied with the brouhaha surrounding the big-screen, live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series, The Last Airbender, which is being helmed by M. Night Shyamalan.

But to understand the butthole nature of this whole thing (hey, subtlety has never been my strong suit), we have to go back to a movie that was released in 2008. Here, then, is a monologue I recently performed at a Thai-American literary event, which breaks down everything you need to know about Hollywood's ongoing race problem. Watch:

Now, back to my regularly scheduled activities....

It's somewhat worth noting that Dev Patel's character, Zuko, isn't just "the lead villain": he actually helps the heroes for a significant portion of the series. Then again, almost the entirety of the fire nation characters are evil, so it doesn't matter as much that Zuko himself isn't.

One could also argue that Dev Patel was cast into the role as an excuse to have the fire nation made up of people among whom M. Night wouldn't stand out too much when he did his inevitable cameo.

What truly pisses me off about the casting, though is the casting calls themselves. For the leads they called for "Caucasian or any other ethnicity", while for extras they asked people to come in "traditional cultural ethnic attire".

It amazes me that I've conversed with people who can ignore racism that blatant.

Except that even Zuko was originally cast white until that actor had to drop out due to scheduling. :(

I feel really sorry for M. Knight's daughter, who he says looks like Katara from the cartoon ... sorry kiddo, even your dad won't cast someone that looks like you! :P

I saw the trailer for The Last Airbender movie and thought it looked really good. I had no idea that there was anything remotely Asian related with the story since I've never seen the toon.

Thanks Prince. Now I want to see the toon before checking out the flick so I can see how badly they've whitewashed the story.

May I ask where you received that picture of Zac Efron shirtless? I would like to see some others that were shot at that time.

It's from his recent People magazine photo shoot. :-)
