Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdottir (the first openly gay head of state government in the world) married yesterday, the first day same-sex marriage was recognized in Iceland. She and partner Jonina Leosdottir (right) had a civil union and then filed for it to become a marriage yesterday.

It is probably more accurate to say the first out democratically elected head of state in modern history. For example these heads of state were also LGBT:

King James
Pope Alexander VI
Afghani King Amunullah Kahn
Queen Anne
Marie Antoinette
Chinese Emperor Gaozu
Sweedish King Gustavus V
French King Henri III
Pope John XII
French Louis XIII
Byzantine Emperor Michael II
Ugandan King Mwanga name a few.

I think she's the head of government, not the head of state-IIRC Iceland has a mostly ceremonial presidency that does that.

Good point. Got mixed up. Thanks.
