Yesterday I said that the news Rahm Emanuel might be stepping down as White House Chief of Staff after the midterm elections was like being told what your birthday present will be early. Today comes news that's much more like getting caught snooping for your Christmas presents so your parents take them all back to the store, lecture you about ruining the spirit of the holidays, and tell you Santa got drunk and punched that little Virginia girl bad_santa.jpgin the face before he passed out in an alley and was arrested for battery on a minor and public intoxication and Christmas is ruined and it's all because you went present searching in mid December.

The Chicago Sun Times says Emanuel is staying put.

Emanuel issued the statement after the Daily Telegraph's suggesting he was out the door. Actually, Emanuel may well be staying in Washington longer than thought. Emanuel promised Obama to stay for two years (so did senior advisor David Axelrod) but now I'm told he has made family plans to remain in Washington next year, a signal he's not moving back to Chicago any time soon.

With one exception: Emanuel has been open about wanting to be mayor one day. If Mayor Daley decides not to run next year--and he has not made public yet his decision --folks I've talked to think he's in for another term--then watch for an Emanuel return.
