What was that about being persecuted?

The Boston Globe has a fantastic feature on Massachusettes Justice Roderick L. Ireland who signed the Supreme Court's decision in favor of same-sex marriage.

roderick-ireland.jpgHe and his family received death threats. His mailbox mysteriously disappeared, prompting the State Police to install a surveillance camera in his bedroom window. When he gave a lecture at Boston University on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a car service with an armed guard was sent to pick him up.

Remember too that Bishop Robinson recently announced his resignation after he couldn't take all of the death threats any more. He wore a bulletproof vest for his ordination.

When Maggie Gallagher starts having to wear a bulletproof vest or travel with an armed guard, I'll start believing all these rumors of anti-gay Christians being persecuted. Until then, I'm going to stick with the "blame the victim" mentality they seem to hold so dear.

Bishop Robinson's resignation really makes me sad. Has any str8 man needed a bulletproof vest when he was consecrated a bishop? I think not. Str8 people will NEVER understand the things we have to endure on a daily basis!
