What a waste of taxpayer money. What happened to making the economy the first priority? What about jobs? The only people getting jobs out of this will be the stupid-people-shut-up.jpglawyers the government has to hire to fight for Republican legislators' bigotry.

The three top House Republican leaders voted Wednesday to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court, requiring the hiring of outside legal counsel at a potential cost of millions of dollars as they are pushing for spending cuts across hundreds of domestic programs.
The House has the authority to defend the statute on its own. Staff who attended the meeting said House general counsel Kerry Kirschner told the participants that he will hire outside legal counsel because his staff is too small to handle such major litigation.

Depending on the hourly rate of the counsel, the number of cases challenging the statute - now at 10 - and the work involved, the cost could reach into the millions of dollars.

Your government at work. Against you. Once again.

It's a dick move designed to pander to the religious right, who are finally waking up to the fact that they've been the Republicans bitches since the 80's with precious little to show for it.

On the other hand, the hand wringing about the R's using government funds rings a bit false. If the administration had decided to defend the law, it would have done so with government-employed lawyers. They would not have been as expensive as hired guns, but they would have been paid for with taxpayer dollars as well. Besides, I imagine that more than a few conservative lawyers will be jumping at the chance to work on this for free, or for reduced rates.

The interesting thing to me is how (and if) this will be used by representatives of either party in the upcoming election.

is this their way of creating jobs?

just asking...

You'd think the ADF would do for free....Or have NOM bear the costs.

GetEqual together with local groups staged a sit-in at Boehner's state office about this. Here's the Fox News video.
