Police Punish Gay Man by Taping Him Drunk and Releasing Video to Press

The police in Akron, Ohio, picked up a Catholic priest for drunk-driving. When he acted up in the pen they video taped his drunken stupidity and then released the video to the press as a form of punishment.

Because this is America, and if you mess with the police they're allowed to do whatever they want (including outing you to your anti-gay employer) to punish you even without a trial. It's the only way to make sure we're free.

The Cleveland Fox station has the video on their website, so it appears to be Fox that released the tape (big surprise). I wrote to them:
I saw the humiliating footage you broadcast on your "news" channel with the drunk priest chained to the wall of a holding tank, accompanied by your assurance that the police department had released the video for broadcast throughout the world "for their protection" and that is was "punishment enough."
What country do YOU live in where the police department serves as judge and jury? If this video were to be viewed at all, it should have been in a courtroom and only if the police (or the priest) felt it was applicable to litigation. Typical of your brand of journalism to see the naked man in the window, but not the burning building he's standing in. I hope the man you have defamed sues the pants off you. This is disgusting - even for Fox.

Disgusting is the first word that comes to mind. Apparently, the chief didn't go to the policeman's school where they learned that "punishment" isn't in their job description. Also, you've got to wonder about their sensitive nature. Any cop who works one weekend in a drunk tank is exposed to exactly what we see on the tape and worse. Who tries to argue with a drunk, as the person off-camera is doing, unless you're trying to provoke more tomfoolery?

For the sake of playing devil's advocate here...
The priest had 3 prior drunk driving convictions, so obviously our judicial system isn't working with this guy - or been punishment 'enough'? The priest has since entered into rehab and has been removed from his church as a result of this public humilation. On the upside; it's possible that lives will be saved from his drunken recklessness on the roads and that he may redeem himself yet? Cops are always filming and then releasing stuff like this - and Fox always broadcasts it. Nothing new there. Though the priest did indeed make lurid and 'propositioning' remarks to officers, there was not a single mention of the word 'gay' in the original report nor the subsequent maelstrom of local publicity here in the Cleveland/Akron area where it occured.

"Cops are always filming and then releasing stuff like this - and Fox always broadcasts it. Nothing new there."

You are right. There doesn't seem to a need for the courts or the constitution. As long as we have the police, the penitentiaries, the media and leave their power unrestrained we can have t v trials and develop a system like Dancing With the Stars uses. We just need a national website. There doesn't really need to be any written instruction, just a thumbs up button and a thumbs down for each case. You would only need two telephone numbers for those w/out internet access. The only remaining things to work out would be who does the sentencing. Maybe we could have special celebrity guests; or, a lottery like Powerball, Mega Millions and have the winner mete out punishment. Then, there is the problem of who plucks out the eyes and who pulls the teeth.

You can go back to your regularly scheduled broadcast. Sorry about the interruption.
