Jeremy Hooper's website, is like a well-organized database of all of the atrocities performed by the religious far-right. gay-hate-sign.jpgJeremy has broken much important news at the page: we found out about Chick-Fil-A's homophobic philanthropy policies through his site, and we generally learn all things NOM from Mr. Hooper.

Jeremy's work has the exhaustiveness of a gumshoe investigative reporter - with thorough, very well-researched pieces that get picked up by major news outlets and progressive organizations all the time.

Jeremy was also very intimately familiar with the hateful NOM anti-gay bus tour across America, which - as Bilerico readers will remember from a notorious stop in Indianapolis - brought out some of the worst and dangerous hateful and angry bigots in America. The messaging was scary, as evidenced by this sign from Indiana that went everywhere on the web.

So imagine Jeremy's sense of satisfaction this morning when he broke the news, NOM bus tour organizer Louis Marinelli has come out for marriage equality.

Here is the bit from the piece that counts:

Okay, but why are we rehashing all of this now, almost a year later? Well. Uhm. Because. Ya See. It turns out. The thing is....

Yes, you read that correctly. While still not in full support of homosexuality on some levels (where he needs our help to correct misinformation), Louis is now [a] repudiating virtually all of the vitriol that he put on the public record; [b] is owning up to the major role that he's played with NOM, including admitting that he was the impetus behind the whole summer tour; and [c] is coming out in full support of the civil marriage rights that gay people are seeking. And even more important that that: He, the man who gave NOM its official "protect marriage" Facebook page and who has been working as an independent contractor with the org. ever since (and still is, reporting directly to Brian Brown, at least up until the moment this post goes live), quite literally credits exposure to the NOM tour as the very thing that led to his change of heart!!!!!

So now, without further ado: Here is Louis J. Marinelli, in his own, unedited words:

Jeremy conducted an interview over email with Louis where Louis revealed his eyes were opened on the tour, and that he repudiates much of what he posted on NOM's Twitter and Facebook feed during the tour. Though Louis still has some things to work out and learn, he's coming along toward the side of the good and the just.

In fact, as you'll see further into the story, which seems to be continuously being updated with new developments, Louis is working to actively scrub NOM's Facebook and Twitter as I write this of all links to the most dangerous of anti-gay writing and hate speech. Please go to the post and read the whole story - this is huge!

I don't understand this Maggie person? Is she truly motivated by (sincere) religious fanaticism, or is it some sort of low self esteem issue that she needs to pick on the only group that's it's still okay to bash?

Thanks for share... Using this kind kudo's piece as lead in to Jeremy's... and sent both to TRMS!

...also note Jeremy says NOM fb site down and a new one up,??? because of this? who knows.

People can change. We must educate and remove the intrinsic fear of the unknown. Only when people become aware of the nature of things do the veils of fear and mystery lift.

Was he also the person who slashed the tires on the NOM bus and blamed it on teh gays? Fuck him, his apology and his backtracking because he could have gotten somebody killed pulling that Reichstag fire crap.

Go back to shoveling food into Maggie The Hutt's Hoover mouth.

What a scoop for Jeremy! He's worked hard at covering NOM's twists and turns and this is a post we should all rejoice about.

Neither...she, and all the other "right-wing anti-gay" hate purveyors, knows exactly what they are doing: Using Gay Hate as a cash cow for padding their bank accounts, garnering adoring followers, and gaining political recognition for personal agrandizement. These people, all of them, use non-profit status of their respective groups to avoid having to work a real job for a living and to avoid paying income tax on the perks they receive as over paid administrators. Their organizations are scams...AND they know it. When they scream and shout that they are protecting American Values, believe them -- they truely are. Its called legalized greed, graft and corruption, not unlike snake oil salesmen selling bottles of foul smelling potions to the ignorant, the afraid, and the emotionally fragile. The only convincing way of defeating these hate mongers is to expose their avarice by, as the saying goes, "Follow the Money". Track the paper trail of where the money goes and how it changes hands and someday, some way, you will find a chink in their financial armor that will bring down their houses built on hate. They don't truely hate us in the same why their financial supporters do; we are simply a convenient subject in their goal statement.
