Bridges McRae, the police officer caught on video beating Duanna Johnson, a black, trans woman who was being detained on prostitution charges that were later dropped, has been sentenced to two years of prison and two years probation.
That time includes punishment for tax evasion. For four years, McRae claimed 99 dependents on his W-4 and then never filed a tax return.
The Duanna Johnson beating shocked the LGBT community when video became available three years ago, bringing to scrutiny to the violent and transphobic police department in Memphis. Johnson was later found shot dead and the killer has not be found.
The fellow officer on video who held Johnson down while McRae beat her lied to investigators saying that Johnson was the aggressor and used handcuffs as brass knuckles, because he "didn't want to be the police officer to be the rat or the snitch on another police officer." He accepted a plea deal and agreed to testify against McRae, and McRae accepted a plea deal last year.
