For my very first session at Netroots I decided to attend a caucus called "Social Strategy Session." netrootsnation.jpgA few people filed into the room, sitting at separate tables and making small talk until 10 minutes into the session when we realized no facilitator would be coming. As individuals moved to attend this caucus and striving to be social justice strategists, we decided to merge as one group of about 14 people, introduce ourselves, and begin to share the issues we've come to discuss at the conference.

As a result of who was represented in the caucus, we spoke about immigration issues, LGBT issues, reproductive justice, and criminal justice. Before long we all realized that our issues were deeply intertwined with one another.

We talked about the importance of sharing our stories, but not without building the authentic relationships that would create the trust it takes to do that sharing. It is apparent how sharing stories can often commodify someone's experience, but at the same time be a useful political tool. How can we honor that tension?
