Obelisk, San Diego's LGBT bookstore, has been destroyed in a fire that gutted the building. The store's inventory sustained heavy water damage.

Several apartments are above the shop, but thankfully no one was injured. The fire was sparked by a worker's torch on a neighboring building's roof.

OMG, my heart goes out to them. I am in there at least once a month in one of the few, very few, GLBTQ bookstores left in America. They brought what little queerness remained in the overdeveloped, over-gentrified district known as Hillcrest. Please keep us informed!

I am very happy, no one was hurt. I am sad the bookstore suffered such a loss of inventory and space. However, I wonder if this was an accident? "The fire was sparked by a worker's torch on a neighboring building's roof." Just wondering, not accusing anyone of anything, really.

Yes, as LGBT people we hear of so many hate crimes that when something like this is said to be totally an accident, we automatically wonder what the real story might be ... but, let's remind ourselves, maybe it really was totally an accident.
