This Snail Is Coming Out of More Than His Shell

It's the Friday before a holiday weekend in the United States, and Pride month is officially wrapped up. And I can think of no better way to bridge that gap than listening to a snail try and come to terms with his sexual and gender identity in support of natural grocer Sequoia. This bit, which hardly mentions the brand it's selling, just won a Bronze Lion advertising award for Film Craft.

This of course relies a little bit on knowing that snails have both male and female reproductive organs, or maybe part of the humor is knowing that most people don't know that.

Gee, if snails are hermaphrodites, then every snail is both homosexual and heterosexual ... yet, it is not bisexual, because all its partners are of one reproductive design. Weird!

The video is really cool from a message standpoint ... plus I find it [=technically amazing=].

Snails only have both sex organs until the first time they reproduce, after that they become female. If a snail mates with another snail and one of them has had sex before, then that particular snail will now be female.

Geez! ... Oy vey! ... this gets weirder and weirder ... no wonder the snail in the video was confused about snail sexuality!
