EQCA.gifSaturday night, Aug. 13, 2011, Roland Palencia took the stage and delivered a roughly 10-minute speech as the new executive director for Equality California. He appeared comfortable and at one point went off the teleprompter with a flash of humor. As I reported in the recent issue of Frontiers In LA, Palencia is dealing with a difficult situation: changing EQCA's direction during a tough economy and while facing a potential referendum to overturn the California Fair Education Act.

Palencia's theme was: "We're not going to take it any more," though he wasn't specific about what actions EQCA was going to take to resolve the problems he laid out, including the possible referendum to overturn the California FAIR Education Act. Nonetheless, many in the crowd gave him a standing ovation after his maiden EQCA Awards gala speech.
