Coupon.jpgFans of, the deal-of-the-day website that's been popular for the past few years, may want to check out Gaypon, a new site that's looking to do the same thing - highlight great deals on products or excursions or other things to do - but for companies or businesses that are notably LGBT-friendly. Users can subscribe to Gaypon, receive emails with coupon-based "deals" in their city, and then choose to buy the coupon. The site reports that the businesses represented are supportive of LGBT advocacy efforts, and that each Gaypon transaction will also result in a "portion" of the proceeds being donated to LGBT advocacy organizations.

According to Tech Crunch:

Before becoming a Gaypon merchant, businesses are put through a background check of sorts, where they are investigated for any bad marks, like complaints of discrimination from customers and employees, poor hiring practices, etc. Gaypon says it also uses various tools, like the Human Rights Campaign's "Corporate Equality Index" that rates American workplaces on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality.

Gaypon plans to donate a portion of proceeds to charitable organizations, and those that support the gay community, like The Trevor Project, which focuses on crisis and suicide prevention amongst LGBTQ youth, and Affirmations, which is one of the largest LGBT community centers in the United States. The exact percentage of those donations, however, is unclear.

The site is looking for nominations for LGBT-friendly businesses now. Nominate one in your city here, and check out a video from the site after the jump.

Is it just me or is this the grossest sounding name for an app evah?

Haha I initially read it as that too. Who knows though ... 'iPad' caught on, didn't it?

It's not you, Bil - when I first saw "gaypon" I immediately thought WTF?!? Then it crossed my mind that maybe Adam wasn't old enough yet to spell Gray Poupon... then I glanced at the article. Meh! Yet another misguided effort to entice us to part with all that "extra disposable income" we're supposed to have, but none of us can ever seem to recall having... I wish I were a programmer instead of an administrator. Then I could write my own stealth-app that I could unleash on b.s. like this and crash it before it clogs any more of the "pipe".

...and Adam, dear, I wasn't being a beyotch about you're literacy. It's just that someone my age and mileage looks at your picture and thinks, "yeah, you're what... 12?" MWAH! Mind you, at 2,431 d.y.o., anyone under the age of 40 is an infant.
