On Tuesday evening I attended a fundraiser for Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) who is up for re-election in 2012. 220px-Maria_Cantwell_official_photo.jpgThe fundraiser was attended by LGBT and allied supporters of the Senator.

The big question in Washington State right now for gays and lesbians is whether we will push for the freedom to marry in 2012. I asked Senator Cantwell in front of 40 or so attendees, if marriage for gays and lesbians was on the ballot in 2012, would she publicly support marriage for gays and lesbians. She quickly responded, "Yes."

Senator Cantwell also spoke about how frustrated she was with the gridlocked Congress because equality issues can not move forward.

She endorsed the repeal of DOMA, the passage of ENDA, was strongly supportive of the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", as well as dozens of other line item issues that must be reformed in our legal code for our families to be treaded equally under the law.

Senator Cantwell is clearly a friend to the LGBT community. I am very pleased that the Senator continues to support our families as we endure our long struggle for equal treatment under the law. It is reassuring to know she is ready to lend her voice when we move forward with marriage for gays and lesbians in Washington State.

I've always liked her- no punches...

Hooray! Only *starts counting on my fingers*, uh, several to go.

Good point, Bil. Do you know how many Senators have publicly supported marriage for gays and lesbians? I know several support the repeal of DOMA, but that's different than saying you support marriage.

Wikipedia says there are 18 Senators on record supporting full marriage equality. There are 28 co-sponsors of the Respect for Marriage Act, which repeals DOMA but also recognizes legal same-sex marriages, but doesn't legalize marriage equality nationwide.

Also, for the record, there appear to be 59 House members who support marriage equality.

Putting on my partisan hat, I'd point out that all 59 House members and 17 of the 18 Senators who support marriage equality are Democrats with the 18th Senator being Bernie Sanders - an Independent Socialist who caucuses with the Dems
