On Friday's edition of Faith & Freedom, a conservative radio project from the Liberty Counsel, a rightwing organization dedicated to "restoring the culture by advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and the family," host Shawn Akers tackled the FAIR Act that passed last month in California. Akers said that the law, which requires instruction that includes LGBT figures and their societal contributions and which lawmakers hope works to curb anti-LGBT bullying in schools, is itself an instance of bullying. LGBT advocates, he said, are actually responsible for bullying more than anti-gay fundamentalists.
Akers, who is the Director of Academic Support and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Law at Jerry Falwell's stiflingly conservative Liberty University, said of the law:
Tell me who's really being bullied here and who's doing the bullying. ... You've got the California legislature and the government saying, 'I don't care what you want to hear in public schools. I'm telling you what you are gonna hear. You are gonna hear, you are gonna study, you are gonna read, you are gonna learn, and you are gonna be tested on the benefits that homosexuals, they claim, have made in the United States. You wanna talk about bullying? This is the state bullying the weakest members of our society.
At The Bilerico Project this month, we've had some great discussions about times when the LGBT community participates in bullying or heated, accusatory debate. But the California FAIR Act, obviously, is not one of those times.
