Katie Carmichael and Deirdre Dibiaggio talked with MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts - who's openly gay - about Ledyard, New York town clerk Rose Belforti who is refusing to give any same-sex couple a marriage license. Belforti instead asks couples to make an appointment with a deputy clerk to get the license.
The two women have filed a lawsuit against Belforti to force her to perform her duty as an elected official. Belforti claims, "New York law protects my right to hold both my job and my beliefs." Governor Cuomo, however, says that she can't pick and choose which portions of the position she gets to uphold.
Carmichael and Dibiaggio are being represented by People for the American Way. Belforti is getting legal assistance from the right-wing legal outfit Alliance Defense Fund - the same group who loves to coach and sue on behalf of anti-gay politicians and public figures.
