The National Organization for Marriage lost in Iowa on Tuesday. liz_mathis.jpgThe anti-gay organization invested $40,000 to try to buy the Iowa State Senate for the Republicans, who pledged to pass a constitutional amendment banning marriage for gays and lesbians.

The Democratic party has protected the right of gays and lesbians to marry since the Iowa Supreme Court granted couples the right to marry in April 2009.

Pro-equality Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal will welcome Liz Mathis to the Iowa Senate. Liz Mathis is a welcome addition to the Iowa House. She supports marriage for all of Iowa's families, and has guaranteed a Democratic majority for the pro-marriage Iowa Senate for now.

We need more pro-equality elected officials in the Iowa legislature, particularly in the Iowa Senate. Right now only one vote is protecting Iowa's gays and lesbians from a threatened state constitutional amendment which would take away our right to marry.

Nevertheless, today we can celebrate. Equality is preserved in the heartland.
