After Daniel Avila, the US Catholic Bishops spokesperson, penned a column for The Pilot, the official publication of the Archdiocese of Boston saying that Satan makes babies gay, the blogosphere erupted in outrage. Now it appears the Archdiocese is walking back from the statement.
A former top official of the Catholic Church in Massachusetts apologized yesterday for an opinion piece he wrote in the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston, suggesting that same-sex attraction is the work of the devil.
The commentary by frequent contributor Daniel Avila, published in Friday's issue of The Pilot, was deleted from the newspaper's website yesterday afternoon. Avila's apology will appear in the issue to be published this week, archdiocesan officials said.
"I deeply apologize for the hurt and confusion that this column caused,'' said Avila, a policy adviser for marriage and family for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Projector Ned sent me a copy of his post about this, but unfortunately forgot to include a link. His title sent me into gales of laughter: "Rosemary's Boo-Boo."
