Zach Adamson will become Indianapolis' first openly gay City-County Councilor after today's election. Adamson, who ran for an at-large seat, had to compete for voters across the entire city unlike those running in a specific district.
Melina Kennedy, who would have been Indy's first female mayor, lost her race to unseat incumbent Mayor Greg Ballard. Adamson's vote total rivaled the amount of votes cast for Kennedy.
Adamson is a board member of the Indiana Stonewall Democrats and was endorsed by the Victory Fund. ISD heavily supported Adamson's campaign and the victory was predicted as a coming-of-age for the LGBT political organization.
"This is a milestone for Indianapolis and a remarkable victory for Zach. We couldn't be happier for him and for the LGBT community in Indianapolis," said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund.
While Zach's sexual orientation was occasionally discussed by the media, it was never a campaign issue. He was one of the first Bilerico readers back when we were an Indiana-focused site.
It wasn't that many years ago that Jerame and Zach both joined the ISD board; now Jerame is the interim Executive Director of National Stonewall Dems and Zach is a City-County Councilor. My, how times have changed - for the better.
